#2 – Memoir

The frantic beating of my heart matched the spastic movements of my sister as we stared up in awe at the California Screamin’, the most exciting ride in Disney’s California Adventures amusement park. Never before in me eleven-year-old life had I seen a larger, more intimidating contraption; with long, winding tracks, steep drops, and even an upside down loop in the shape of Mickey Mouse’s head.

I excitedly took the stairs two-by-two, with my father and younger sister trailing closely behind. Unfortunately, my mother was stuck waiting for us below, by the merry-go-round, with my youngest sister, who was to short for the ride.

Upon reaching the end of the line, I sighed in great distress; it seemed as if it stretched on for miles! Every person in the whole park must have been waiting in that line, I thought we would never get a chance to ride. I informed my father of my anguish, and he assured me that we would get our turn.

The unbearable heat was pounding against my already sun-burnt neck as I impatiently began tapping my fingers against the metal railing. My sister looked just as excited as I; she was bouncing up and down on the balls of her feet as she gazed up at the riders who were passing us by.

The line was moving quite slowly, considering it was a four minute ride. We had been waiting nearly half an hour, and we were very near the front of the line. Adrenaline coursed through me as the bored looking engineer informed us that we would be able to board the next ride. Anxiously, I watched as people got off the ride, and I began bouncing on my toes. The engineer instructed us to get onto the ride. My younger sister ecstatically grabbed my hand and pulled me forward, into the car.
